Getting Started

Welcome to How to Blog For Beginners a Full Guide, I have been wanting to write this for some time. When I told my wife that I had been writing blogs for my webpage, her reaction was very similar to the reactions of many of my friends: “Who reads blogs anymore? I just don’t have the time.” I explained to her that most of what she found on the internet when searching using search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing are, in fact, blog articles. When you’re looking for that perfect pancake recipe… blog. You need to research the top five phones on the market based on what functions they have that are specific to your needs… blog. Best cost-effective vacation destinations with palm trees… also a blog. Most blogs are attached to a website that is related to the content that the blog is about, so if you’re searching for vacation destinations, the site that the blog is hosted on will normally be travel-related. The pages you find on the internet no longer look like the classic image of a blog from the 1990s with lots of text, few pictures, and altogether too much information about something I’m not interested in. No, the blogs of today are sporting great pictures, diagrams, research, and links for further study.

In today’s article, which if we’re being completely honest is a blog, we’re going to delve deep into the brick and mortar of building a blog, why you want one, and what success will look like. Starting your own blog is not just about sharing your thoughts with the world; it’s about building a platform, making connections, and possibly even generating income.

Blogging can be an exhilarating Venture

Blogging can be an exhilarating venture, but it often comes with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. However, by the time you finish reading this article, you’ll have the foundational knowledge to embark on your blogging journey with confidence.

Choose a Niche

The first step in starting your blog is selecting a niche—a specific topic or subject area that your blog will revolve around. Your niche is the cornerstone of your blog’s identity, and it’s essential for success. Here’s how to go about it:

Knowledge and Interest: Your niche should be something you have a substantial amount of knowledge about and, equally importantly, something you have a genuine interest in. If you’re passionate about your chosen niche, it will be easier to write compelling content.

Audience Appeal: While it’s crucial to be knowledgeable and passionate about your niche, it’s not necessary to have an enormous potential audience right from the start. The key is that other people should have an interest in your subject. Sometimes, your niche finds you rather than the other way around.

For instance, if you work in a specific industry or have a deep passion for a hobby, that can be an ideal starting point for your niche. It’s important to remember that your blog is an opportunity to establish yourself as a professional and authority in your chosen area.

Choose a Blogging Platform

Once you’ve defined your niche, it’s time to decide which blogging platform to use. The choice of platform is significant, as it can impact your ease of use, customization options, and long-term flexibility. Here are some popular blogging platforms to consider:

WordPress: WordPress is a versatile and widely used platform, powering over 810 million sites globally. While it’s user-friendly, it does require some initial setup and technical know-how. You’ll need a hosting account and a domain name to get started. The advantage of WordPress is that you have full control and ownership of your blog.

Wix and Squarespace: If you’re not comfortable with the technical aspects of WordPress, platforms like Wix and Squarespace offer an all-in-one solution. These platforms are designed for users with little web design experience. They provide hosting, domains, and easy-to-use website builders, making it simple to get your blog up and running.

Medium and Blogger: If your goal is to start blogging quickly and without the hassle of setup, platforms like Medium and Blogger are excellent choices. Simply create an account, set up your profile, and you’re ready to start blogging. Many bloggers maintain both a WordPress site and a Medium or Blogger account to reach a broader audience. They often post a shorter teaser version of their blog on these platforms to drive traffic to their main site.

Whether you choose the flexibility of WordPress, the user-friendliness of Wix or Squarespace, or the quick start of Medium or Blogger, your blogging journey begins with a niche and a blogging platform. In the following sections, we’ll delve into the intricacies of creating engaging content and building an audience, equipping you with the tools for a thriving blog.

Building Your Blog

Congratulations! You’ve set the stage for your blogging journey, and it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start crafting high-quality, engaging content. In this section, we’ll explore the essential steps to ensure your blog posts captivate your audience and keep them coming back for more.

A. Understanding Your Audience and Authenticity

As you embark on your blogging adventure, remember that authenticity is your greatest asset. Start with a blog post about yourself; readers often respond well to authentic content. Be real with your audience, sharing who you are and what drives your passion for your chosen niche. By demonstrating your authenticity, you’ll build trust and connection with your readers.

However, brace yourself for haters, because, as the saying goes, “haters gonna hate.” No matter how genuine and well-intentioned your content is, there will always be individuals who express dissatisfaction. It’s crucial to develop a thick skin and not take negative comments to heart. Over time, you’ll realize that the most vocal group tends to be those who are dissatisfied. Understand that you can’t please everyone, and some people may never be satisfied. Take comments with a grain of salt, and remember that people can be unpredictable.

This all boils down to understanding your audience, embracing authenticity, and getting accustomed to the rhythm of blogging.

B. Creating a System for Consistent Content Delivery

Consistency is the cornerstone of successful blogging. Readers appreciate knowing when to expect new content, so establish a regular posting schedule. Whether it’s once a week or bi-weekly, stick to it. Your consistency will help retain and grow your readership.

To make the process easier, create a system for delivering content. Here’s how:

Topic Research: To find compelling blog topics, use Google as your ally. Search for your niche and explore the “People Also Ask” section in the search results. These are popular topics people are searching for, and using them as your blog titles can boost your visibility in search results.

Organize Your Files: Set up an organized file structure on your computer. Create a main folder for your blog, and within it, create subfolders for each blog post. Inside each post’s folder, include a “media” folder for images and a “resources” folder for links and documents.

Image Resources: Find relevant images to accompany your blog posts. Websites like Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay offer free-to-use photos with clear attribution guidelines. Make sure to cite the photographer’s work and include links when using these images.

Paid Resources: Consider subscription-based services like Envato Elements for a wider range of assets, from images to templates.

Resource File: Maintain a “resources” file where you record all the links to photographers, sources, and other references used in your blog. Save your Word document with your content in this folder for easy access.

By understanding your audience, embracing authenticity, and establishing a content delivery system, you’re well on your way to creating a blog that captures readers’ hearts and minds. In the next section, we’ll explore strategies for promoting your blog and building an audience.
